The Backyard Storage System

The time has come for you to purchase a backyard storage unit. You are running out of room and need that extra space for storage. Where do you begin? Before seeking out the best storage unit for your backyard you will need to carefully plan the need for the unit. You will also have to take into consideration the size that you need.  Will this storage be for storage only or will it need to be a workshop as well.  If a workshop is needed you can find storage units with storage on one side and the Workshop situated on the next.

What will be the use of the storage?  You can place many items in your storage unit such as gardening tools, tools, bikes, outdoor furniture, firewood, lawn and garden tools. There are many things that the storage unit can be used for. It is up to you to make that decision of the proper use for your unit.  If you have children you can make the storage system a playhouse for the children or a storage unit for their toys.  Storage units are sometimes used for an office or room where you can just get away.

The storage unit can be purchased or it can be constructed. Decide on your options to entering the storage unit. You will need to make a decision of whether or not to have only one door or two. You can also have windows installed on your unit. You will also need to consult with the city officials where you reside. Some places have restrictions on the construction or the placement of the storage units. You may also want to investigate restrictions when it comes to installing utilities. You may want electricity and even a telephone installed inside of your storage unit.  The cost of doing this may be very high.

When seeking out a building you will need to take into consideration that your items will be protected from inclement weather as well as pest.  The storage units give you easy access to your stored belongings such as tools, toys, bikes, equipment and supplies. This is definitely a way to keep your yard and home neat. You will want to have the shed placed where it is convenient to your home to make it easier to get to and from.

You can invest in the metal storage unit or the wooden storage unit.  The metal storage units are constructed from aluminum, galvanized steel and corrugated steel. The metal based storage units should be placed on concrete. The unit needs to be secure using bolts. This will need to be done in order to the potential damage that may arise if not secured properly.  The wooden units look great, but they have a disadvantage to them as well. The wood tends to rot or split. There is wood varnish on the market that will help you to tackle this issue. Another form of wood is cedar which is a bit more expensive.

Whichever designs of storage unit you invest in remember that that this is an investment that produces a simple backyard storage solution for many years to come.

Outdoor Storage Bench Solutions

There are many different kinds of outdoor storage benches to choose from. Generally they come in kit form, unpainted, so you can finish them exactly the way you'd like to. As for price, they tend to range between $100 and $150. You could buy your own materials, of course, but it's nice if you get most of your materials from a kit.

If you search on Amazon, you can see some if you just type 'outdoor storage bench'.

The Suncast PB6700 Patio Bench goes for between $105 and $115.

Rubbermaid might be the way to go. It's got a stylish plastic version, called their Rubbermaid Patio Storage Bench, Dark Platinum #3764. It goes for $130.61 and looks nice with a sunburst design on the back instead of some ugly design. It only takes about four minutes to put up.

Suncast makes a simple deck box that can also double as a simple bench. Customers love it and give it great reviews. Suncast also makes their Suncast SS1000 Storage Seat, which is smaller and very inexpensive.

The moral of the story is, always go to Amazon, even if Amazon isn't the place you're going to purchase your things and look at their reviews (if they carry the model that you're looking for, of course).

The Lutyen Storage Bench doesn't look like a bench that you'd ever want to put outdoors: it's gorgeous! This bench is as comfortable as it is beautiful with its high back and rounded arms!

As you can see, there are lots of options for excellent outdoor storage solutions, even if you don't have room for a shed. A nice, roomy, storage bench will go a long way.

Backyard Storage Solutions

No matter how big your house is, you always need backyard more storage. Have you ever in your life lived in a house that had enough storage space? I know that I haven't. So, how does one store all their accumulated stuff?

One way to store items you can't yet part with is a storage shed. Sheds are called various different things, depending upon slight differences between their sizes. A Storage Barn looks like a little barn with an angled roof and the typical barn door with the X across it. A Storage Building is like a storage shed, but it's longer. Sometimes it has cupolas on the roof to make it look more like a house, and tends to have more windows. It also costs twice as much. A Storage Shed is simple. At its simplest, it's a box with a slanted roof.

They can be made out of different materials, such as fiberboard, aluminum, DuraTemp. They can have vinyl siding, or be made of cedar. They can be made out of Knotty pine, or be made to look like Swiss houses. They might be made of logs like a log cabin, or be made to look like a single or even double-story house.

You can pay $10,000 for it, or you can pay $500.

However, be careful, there's always that level that is reached where your local zoning ordinance will call it a building instead of a shed. People have gotten into problems before by just building a fancy tree house.

Realize that you might have to have an inspector come over and check out the shed after you're done. If you didn't check first, but you installed electricity into the shed... you might be either removing it, or paying a fine. If you make a permanent foundation for the unit, thinking that it will certainly keep out mice now... you might have put it in the wrong place. It's hard to move a poured foundation, so check before you pour it to see if there are any regulations forcing it to be a certain distance away from the property line.

When you're considering different kinds of backyard storage solutions, generally the most boring is also the safest. Why? Well, they made it generic enough to conform to all regulations.

Do You Need Storage Shed Windows?

When you're building a storage shed, you'll want storage shed windows. Remembering that you want your storage shed to be easy to build, it'll be best if you can just cut a rectangular hole in the plywood, inset the window, and affix screws that you can drill in with a drill and bit (using sealant around the edge to make sure that it doesn't leak).

I've found them on http://www.ebay.com before for $46. They have some interesting shapes, even ones which have rounded tops, so your storage shed doesn't have to look ugly like most of them do if they're just rectangles with no windows. The frames are generally made from aluminum, and they can be just as easily used in tree houses or playhouses as they could be used in a storage shed. After all, a tree house is just basically a storage shed in the sky.

The one that I saw had a outside dimension of 15 1/2" x 22 1/2" and a cut-hole size of 14 1/2" x 21 3/4". They tend to have a white frame, but they also come in brown or with a J-channel mount.

You can also find crank-out windows in case you want good ventilation, or if you're actually building either a play house, tree house, or lawn house. There's no reason at all that you couldn't make a fun tree house as well as a storage shed once you see how much fun it is. The kids will love you for it. They need a place which they can call their own.

Generally those windows are attached using #8 x 1" pan-head screws.

Storage shed windows don't have to be dull, either. There are plans out there for a Colonial-style Storage Shed. This would make a nice little project. They say that you'd be spending between $1600 and $2000 for the shed once it's done, which seems very reasonable considering that it's actually two rooms. One is a 4 x 10 foot storage area and the other is a 10 x 12 ft. children's playroom.

They give you a sixteen-step process, with photos, which will really help if you're going to make this shed. They first show you could make the floor, building it on top some cement blocks, laying cross beams, nailing plywood on top of the floor. They have an option to 'see all sixteen steps' which is handy. If you're going to build your own shed, you can see that there are many different ways you could build the shed.

Always make sure that you follow all rules applicable in your area about building a shed. That would be a shame if you were to build a shed, only to find that the neighborhood association doesn’t allow them. Note how just the difference of the use of interesting roofing materials changes the whole mood of the thing from it being boring, to it being interesting. Here you can see the kind of windows they put into their shed. They don’t have to be very fancy to look nice.

You should study many different plans before you finalize your own shed. If you don't understand part of the process before you begin, you might end up having problems later down the road. If you're looking for interesting storage shed windows, consider the overall feel of the shed once you're done.
