Are Your Tropical Fish Sick?
Like everything else on this planet that lives and breathes, your aquarium fish get sick much like we do. They don't catch the same things that we do, of course but they can be just as bad for them - some even fatal!
Why Do Tropical Fish Get Sick?
There are many things that can cause a fish to deteriorate in health, however the most frequent cause is stress! Stress has a way of making the immune system less effective whether it be in humans or fish. As a result, it's rather easy for a fish to fall ill from the many forms of bacteria it swims around in - bacteria that would otherwise have no effect if the fish were relaxed and happy.
What Makes Your Fish Stressed Out?
While you might not think of a tropical fish as prone to stress, they are. Introducing them to a new tank, adding more fish or even adding decorative objects can be sources of stress. That's why there are so many procedures in preparing a fish tank, adding something new or moving fish to a new location. You also must keep the tank water clean with frequent water changes. Taking care of your fish and tank properly will reduce stress and keep your fish healthy.
Signs That Your Fish Is Sick
Just like when you are sick, your fish just doesn't seem to have the same vigor he used to have might be a sign he is sick, so it is critical that you observe your fish every day. If you notice that your fish's fins or scales have tears, abrasions or anything unusual this may be a sign of illness.
Giving Your Fish Better Health
One way to reduce illness is to reduce the stress on your fish. This means making sure the aquarium is clean, feeding your fish the appropriate foods and introducing them slowly when you first bring them home. Keep a keen eye on the behavior of the fish in your aquarium so you can get to judge when they are stressed. Perhaps that new plant isn't good for them? Or maybe a new fish or piece of decor just tips the balance too much.
The least stressful environment for your tropical fish is going to be the one that is closest to nature. If you can manage to represent a habitat that's close to the original, you should be able to enjoy your collection of healthy fish for a very long time.
