If you're the best man at your friend's wedding, then chances are you know the groom very well. You're also aware by now that you'll be expected to make a best man speech - a toast - at the wedding reception. To help you prepare for the speech, here are just a few things you should remember.

*Plan it! Don't try to wing it. Even if you're quick-witted (of course you are!), even the most glib person's mind can go completely blank without warning.

At least jot down a few points or key phrases if you don't want to write it out word-for-word ahead of time.

*Humor is good, but don't forget to be serious. Okay, that's an oxymoron, but it's important. Without a little humor, you risk boring the guests.

However, it's imperative to remember that your best man speech is a tribute to a couple's new life together. Both of them are taking their marriage seriously, and they need to know that you honor that. Sarcasm might be funny and enjoyable in the right circumstances, but please remember that it is NEVER appropriate in a wedding speech.

*Keep it brief. Please don't go on and on. If you can, try to practice in front of at least one other person. Watch their eyes. If the eyes start glazing over, it's time to find something to cut out from your speech.

*Careful with the anecdotes. Telling stories about old girlfriends or reminding the assembled guests of a particularly embarrassing moment will not endear you to your friend's new wife. You want your buddy's wife to like you at least a little, or you won't be seeing him much after the wedding!

*Talk about something you like or admire about the bride-- if it's appropriate! Remember the part about wanting to endear yourself to her?

*Above all, be sincere. You were picked to be the best man for a reason. Your best man speech will be remembered with gratitude if you keep these points in mind and share in the joy of your friend's happiness.
