Tips For Planting Tulip Bulbs

by Lee Dobbins

With Spring rapidly approaching, you will see tulips start to pop up everywhere Unlike other flowers, planting tulip bulbs isn't always as easy as sticking a seed in the ground and covering it up with dirt. Strategically place your bulbs where you want them to go in order to achieve the best results. Also, plan to replace the bulbs every five to six years.

Tulips are easy to plant and come in many colors which should be considered when planting tulip bulbs. To have a beautiful tulip garden is a rare kind of pleasure and to make a start, just follow the tips and methods given here.

The first task of digging a hole for planting the tulip is more than simple and easy; the depth of the hole must be about ten inches and the soil at the bottom of the hole has to be left a little loose just to help air and water travel through, without hindrance, to in and around the bulb you have planted. You will be able to do this by putting back 2-3 in. of the soil that you dug up, and the soil have plenty of air.

It's important to place your bulb into the hole the right way. It is best to have them all at an even depth, if you want all of your tulips to come up around the same time. The large end of the bulb should be placed in the dirt with the smaller end upwards. Plant your bulbs according to the package - too deep and they won't grow, too shallow and animals will dig them up for food.

The most vibrant gardens will be the ones where the gardener used manure or compost to fill in the holes during planting, rather than just regular fill dirt. Tulip bulbs only bloom successfully when they have the things they need to grow, including one of the best ideas, nitrogen. The dirt around the bulb should be filled in gently so the bulb isn't bumped out of place, but you must pack down the surface dirt firmly to keep dogs or other animals from digging. To put the proverbial cherry on top, sprinkle mulch over the top of the bed to lock in the moisture and keep rodents out.

Planting tulip bulbs is rewarding, but it can be monotonous work especially if you have a lot to plant. Planting tulips today will mean beautiful blooms for years to come.
