Saying Goodbye

You may think of your shed as an old friend--a place to keep all your things...maybe a getaway for you and your tools or gardening supplies.  For our family, our shed was a place to store our lawn mower, bikes, and miscellaneous "stuff".  And, as you can see, it was our dog's running track.  The neighbor's dog would jump the fence to come visit and they would chase each other around and around; it was quite fun to watch!

You can sort of see in this picture that our shed wasn't in the best shape.  It had seen better days.  What you can't see in this photo are the many lifeforms that had taken shelter there over the years...snakes, squirrels, spiders, and lots and lots of wasps!  It was always an adventure to go too far into the shed.

Time takes its toll and many good things come to an end.  This photo shows the beginning of the distruction.  This really wasn't the right type of shed for our climate.   It was made of pressboard and untreated wood.  It was put on the ground with some wooden pallets for a floor instead of on a cement slab, too, so the shed absorbed a lot of snow and water over the years, especially near the bottom.

Once destruction started, it came down pretty easily.  Perhaps a wooden shed was not the right choice for Michigan--but it was here already when we bought the house.  I will say that my husband took great pleasure in tearing it down (he got stung by those wasps more than once!).

Just like the right tool is important for completing a job, choosing the right material for your shed will help you be happy with your choice.  Knowing your climate and weather conditions in your area are crucial when choosing your shed.  If you live in a wet or very humid climate, you might do better with a Vinyl or Rubbermaid Shed.

Hopefully, by choosing the right materials, you won't have to say goodbye to your "trusted friend" before you're ready.
